This 12-week course is designed to guide students though the entire wood firing process. Through classroom demonstrations and discussions, students will seek to develop a body of work specifically geared toward the wood/soda kiln. This course provides a unique opportunity to create work from start to finish with detailed firing strategies and schedules to act as a guide. Classroom sessions at The Frederick Clay Studio will focus on making work, clay and slips choices, glazing, wadding and other preparations. The firing portion of this class will take place in Smithsburg, MD at the conclusion of the session and will focus on firing strategies, kiln safety, and firing theory.

Participants will need to have transportation and be available to work two, 4 hour shifts during the firing. No prior wood kiln experience is necessary. An additional firing fee of $150 will also be collected to help cover the cost of glaze, wood, and wadding.

Important things to consider before signing up:

-Pots must be bisque fired, glaze and wadded for loading at 9:00 am on Loading Day. -Loading participation is encouraged, but not required.

-Firing: Must be available for two, 4-hour shifts throughout the firing weekend.

-All clay for the wood kiln MUST be cone 10. Students will be responsible for damaged or destroyed kiln shelves.

-Students must produce 3-4 cubic feet of bisqued work in a 12-week period.

-Students must commit to back-to-back 6-week sessions followed by the firing.

-A $150 studio fee will be paid directly to Tim Sherman before loading day.

-Glazing, wadding and firing will take place at Tim’s studio: 3710 Garfield rd. Smithsburg, Md 21783

Tuition includes 50 pounds of clay, bisque firings at Frederick Clay Studio, and access to the studio during *Open Studio hours.

Students are responsible for cleaning all classroom tools and work areas by the end of class.

Please remove jewelry from wrists and fingers, tie back long hair, trim long fingernails and wear clothes that can get dirty.

You must be paid and registered to reserve a space in the class.

*Open Studio Hours: For enrolled adult students only. 6 hours free with registration; each additional hour $3/hr. Hours subject to change when workshops, parties, or special events are in session, or when a monitor is not available.
